Dear FTHS Students,

The information on these pages is taken directly from The MLA Handbook for Writers of Research

Papers, Sixth Edition
. It is the most current information that we have available to us to guide you

through this often confusing process. We, your teachers, cannot emphasize enough the importance

of citing your sources and setting up your papers in the correct format. If you learn how to do this

now, your college years will be a breeze.

Remember M[odern] L[anguage] A[ssociation] is just one way to cite sources but it is the only

citation guide used at FTHS.

All papers here at FTHS should be formatted according to MLA guidelines. This means:

  • Times New Roman
  • Size 12 font
  • One inch margins top, bottom, left and right
  • Last name and page number one half inch from top in top right hand corner of each page. In Microsoft Word go to View - Header and Footer, Align Right, Type Last name and insert one space, Click insert page numbers. Manually inserting page numbers will result in the same page number being placed one each page, you need the pages to be in a sequence, not all the same.
  • In top left hand corner, one inch from top, type

Your first and last names

Your teacher's name

Subject and Period

Date (written out)

  • All text should be double spaced.

If you need further assistance, each teacher on campus has a copy of the MLA Guide. Your English

teachers will help you if you are still confused after consulting the book. Just make a F.I.R.E

appointment.

This site has been put together to enable you to use MLA correctly. Do not reference any other sites

or use any citation machines. This information is the most academically correct and will be updated

as new MLA information is released.

Yours in academic honesty,

The Teachers of FTHS
