Searching for the Hero Within:
Action or Apathy in the 21st Century

In this age of cynicism, terrorism and apathy, we are forced to take a look at what is going on around us and wonder, is there any good left in the world? One of the arguments people make is that we live in a society that is nihilistic. Others argue that we have to go a little further to find the good, they say that there is reason to be hopeful, people are just afraid of each other and afraid of becoming involved. In this project we WILL get involved. We WILL make a difference. We WILL determine the answer to the essential question. We WILL effect change in our own community. We WILL learn to appreciate and be proud of the community and the world that we live in.

This is our plan - YOU are going to become a HERO.

We are going to study heroes, their characteristics and traits and look at why they are considered heroes.

We are going to look at heroes from all different subject areas and walks of life.

You will decide how you would like to become a hero, keeping in mind this journey has to be a learning stretch, be something you are passionate about, have a purpose, and make a community contribution.

You will write a proposal stating how you are going to be a hero.

You will choose a mentor to guide you on your heroic journey.

You will take your project into the community and be the hero.

You will write a paper about your heroic service and its benefits to society.

You will prepare a portfolio documenting your heroic journey.

You will present your journey to a board of community members.
